I don't think being physically big enough should be your main concern. Our daughter will be 20 months when our son is born, but we still plan on keeping her in the crib. Why? Because when she sleeps she is all over the crib! Even with a rail on both sides of a regular bed, she would end up falling off. I would say that you should look at your son's development and not so much his growth.

Now, you could do what we're planning on doing and see how it goes... we already have the bed that is going to be our daughter's. We're going to have the mattress on the floor and let her take naps there sometimes. That way, she can get used to the new bed, she won't feel rushed into and if she falls, it won't be far. Since she's already down to one nap a day, we plan on putting the new baby in the crib when she's not using it. That way he can get used to sleeping in the crib and she can get used to another baby using it. For the first few months, he's going to sleep in our room in a pack-n-play/bassinet just as our daughter did. But him sleeping in the crib sometimes will make it easier for me to get chores done in the bedroom.

Just a suggestion.

Congratulations and good luck!

The bed is fine, but make sure the room is completely baby proofed.

Depends on the child. I had to move mine at 16 months because they could climb out of the crib. We used a regular bed for all 3. I just went to the store and bought the rails that slide under the matress. We got 2 (one of each side of the bed) Don't use the wall as one. It may not but completely against the wall and they could get stuck. I did have one that still fell out of that little area at the bottom.
If he is not ready though I wouldn't force it. He could then resent the baby because the baby stole his bed. You could put the baby in a pack n play for a few months in the beginning and then see if he is ready to transition to a big kid bed. He may even be willing to give it to his sibling.

I cant see why it'd be a problem. Loads of people dont bother with a toddler bed. As long as he cant hurt himself if he gets out of bed in the night. Maybe put a gate up at his door so he cant get to the stairs etc?

17 months is very young to put him in a normal sized bed (in my opinion). I would continue to use a cot for a while longer or get a toddler bed. A rail will not keep him in and a normal height bed could mean unnecessary accidents.

I kept my son in a toddler bed until he turned four, simply because it was easier for him to get in and out of bed by himself without getting hurt. He moved around a lot in his sleep too, so I just put a pile of pillows and folded up comforters in the floor next to him while he was in bed so if he rolled out he wouldn't get hurt. They also have toddler beds with rails on the sides to help keep little ones from rolling out of bed. I'd go with the toddler bed until your son gets big enough that he can climb into your bed all by himself.

It would be a good idea as long as he can climb out of bed properly on his own just in case.

I had my first son in a normal bed with rail at 12 months...had to get him out of the crib because he climbed out many many times. My second son was removed from the crib at around 16 months, same reason. I found the regular bed worked well, I left a space at the end of the bed rail so they could get out of bed without climbing. I don't believe in trying to contain a child...if they want out of bed they are going to get out one way or another. It's just important to make sure their room is safe for them, and if your worried about them getting up without you waking up use a baby monitor, then you'll hear when they are up and about.

My youngest daughter is 19 months, and we have just put her in bunk beds with her older sister. She loves it! I feared having endless nights of putting her back into bed after her getting up, but she hasn't done it once! I dont think age really matters, it depends on whether the child is ready for a big bed, but try it, it cant hurt to give it a go.

Even if he has to stay in the crib a little while longer you can get a bassinet for the baby and the baby can stay in it until it can role over so that will give you a couple more months
